Body Contouring Candidates
In broad terms, body contouring addresses:
- Excess skin
- Sagging skin
- Excess fat
Both men and women seek out body contouring. Men are often interested in these procedures after major weight loss. Female patients may also have lost weight, or may want to renew their physiques after pregnancy. Aging can also be a factor driving interest in these surgeries.
The following are several problem areas corrected with body contouring:
- Protruding abdomen
- Stretched and separated abdominal muscles (often a result of pregnancy)
- Sagging, deflated breasts
- Fat on the belly, back, thighs, waist and elsewhere
The only way to know for sure if you are a candidate is to visit Dr. Corey. After discussing your goals with you and viewing the area you would like to change, he will be able to describe which aesthetic procedures line up with your goals. While Dr. Corey does perform surgery on the above mentioned areas, it should be noted that some patients are candidates for major body lifting procedures after weight loss that Dr. Corey does NOT perform. Generally these would be lifting or surgical tightening of the thighs, back, arms or buttocks.
Common Candidacy Questions
The following are basic Q&As. Please call our office if you have other questions or wish to schedule a consultation with Dr. Corey.
How long will the results last? The longevity of the results depends on the specific body area and the procedure, but all of these surgeries produce lasting results. In the cases of major weight loss, however, the skin does retain some of its “stretchiness” and even after surgery can have a certain relaxed feel to it.
What if I'm currently overweight? Dr. Corey can determine if you are a good candidate now based on your current weight. For the best results, you should be as close to your ideal weight as possible. If you continue to lose a lot of weight after surgery, you may feel less satisfied with the results because they might not look the same after you lose the weight.
What if I've undergone bariatric surgery? Body contouring procedures are a great fit for people who have undergone bariatric surgery. You may feel very happy about the weight you have been able to lose, but you may wish that the sagging skin left behind was tight. No amount of exercise or dieting will address this type of deflated tissue, but skin tightening surgery can. Liposuction or a tummy tuck may be the answer if some excess, stubborn fat persists after you've reached your weight loss goal.
When will I be able to go back to work? Recovery varies based on the type of procedure. We will discuss specific timelines with you when you visit us for a consultation. You may need to take a week or more off from work. Intensive exercise and physical activity will need to be delayed for several weeks.
