When to Consider a Breast Lift After Augmentation

A profile shot of a woman covering her breasts after a breast lift after augmentationBreast augmentation can deliver fuller, more shapely breasts, but time, gravity, and life events like pregnancy or weight changes can shift those results. If your implants no longer sit as high as they once did or you’re noticing breast tissue sagging that wasn’t there before, it might be time to consider a breast lift.

Since 1993, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John J. Corey has performed breast enhancement procedures for women in the Scottsdale area and from across the globe. Known for his international training in Brazil and his leadership as a former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Dr. Corey can help you decide when a breast lift after augmentation is a good option.

Signs You Might Need a Breast Lift

After breast augmentation, a lift may be necessary when:

  • Your nipples point downward or sit below the breast crease.
  • You have increased skin laxity or sagging over the implant.
  • The implant is still sitting up where you like it, but your breast tissue has begun to slide down off the front, giving your nipples and breast a much lower postion.
  • You experience dissatisfaction with shape, symmetry, or contour.

These changes are normal and can develop gradually over the years. A lift can reposition breast tissue and nipples to restore a more youthful appearance, even without replacing your implants.

Timeframe: How Long After Augmentation Should You Wait?

It’s common to wait several years before considering a lift, especially if the initial augmentation was done in your 20s or 30s. However, every woman is different. Factors like skin elasticity, implant size, and pregnancy can impact how your breasts age. In general, if it’s been five to ten years since your surgery and you’re noticing drooping, it’s worth a consultation.

What a Breast Lift Can (and Can’t) Do

A breast lift can:

  • Elevate sagging tissue
  • Reposition downward-pointing nipples
  • Improve breast shape and firmness
  • Do all of the above but with the neccessity of now having scars placed on the breast in the classic “anchor” pattern.

However, a lift won’t:

  • Increase volume significantly (unless combined with new implants)
  • Prevent future sagging permanently

Dr. Corey may recommend pairing a lift with an implant exchange if your goals include added fullness or reshaping.
