The terms cosmetic surgeon and plastic surgeon are often used interchangeably, but they are far from the same thing. To become board-certified by the ABPS, a surgeon must:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school
- Complete at least three years of training in a general surgery residency program
- Complete at least two years of additional residency devoted to plastic surgery
- Pass extensive written and oral exams
- Submit before and after photos of patients to a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons
Board-certification is a voluntary process, but one that indicates a higher level of dedication to the art and science of aesthetic procedures.
